Who is Rising Toronto Rapper Killy?
2017 was a big year for Killy. The Canadian native blew up from a song called Killamonjaro and ever since then his star has been rising. Killamonjaro has so far gathered over 13 million views on YouTube and over five million plays on SoundCloud. He’s from the city of Toronto, the city which has given us Drake, The Weeknd and Tory Lanez who are all huge stars. Killy certainly has huge steps to follow.
He is one of the new wave of what we call “anime-influenced rappers.” Based on his Instagram and Twitter he appears to be a huge anime fan (his Instagram name is even called Hood Hokage, which is a term you will see on the popular anime series Naruto.
He is a 19-year-old Asian rapper who was born in Toronto on August 19, 1997, and claims be inspired by Young Thug, Travis $cott and Tame Impala. He also grew up listening to Kanye West, Mobb Deep, Soulja Boy and Joey Bada$$. He started rapping seriously in 2016 and dropped tracks; Economics, Senorita, Bug Bux and Kennedy Rd. Killy is the true definition of an overnight success, it only took him a few months to blow up and a huge part of that is due to his attractive and assessable sound.
He has a dark, ambient and melodic trap sound. It is mostly bass and piano driven which expertly suits his flow very well. The track No Romance is a perfect example of this. It is infectious and produced very well. He raps about the pleasures of life which include references to molly and weed. Keep an eye out for him, we predict that he is going to have a huge 2018 and could even pull an upset and make the official XXL Freshman 2018 spot. We look forward to his debut project which should be dropping this year. Since both he and Drake are from Toronto, perhaps they may surprise us with a song they are both on.
