Drake – The Calm

Artist: Drake

Album: So Far Gone

Song Release Date: February 13 2009

Length:  4:04

Starting of our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list is The Calm. When I listen to the calm I get the feeling that Drake is just tired of it all and thinks that his new found fame is not only causing him problems but to the people around him too. What most famous people dread the most is others suddenly asking them for help and for Drake that only exacerbates the pressure he already had. He wants to be alone drinking champagne and he’s feeling distant from everyone he knows. He knows he lives a different life from others but it’s got him feeling soulless and ultimately alienated. The Calm deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Drake – I get Lonely too

Artist: Drake

Album: N/A

Song Release Date: February 13 2009

Length:  4:10

We all get lonely when we miss that special someone. I get Lonely Too is an underrated and largely unknown cut that flew right under the radar, only the truest Drake stans can remember this song that dropped way back in 2010. This song is so sensitive but it’s also sad to me because of all the girlfriends you’ve been with there is always one that you have loved the most. So when this song plays you start to think about her and you feel lonely and depressed without her presence near you. I Get Lonely Too deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Song Release Date: February 13 2015

Length:  5:20

Jungle is slow ballad song that showcases how good Drakes vocals are. Drake has been pretty open in his career in how fame and success have changed his life and in particular the impact both have had on relationships he has had with women. Jungle details Drake’s struggles to stay in touch with a girl as his fame grows and his schedule becomes packed.  His vocals are excellent and you can feel the emotion and softness coming from his voice. This is one of Drake’s best signing tracks and comfortably my favourite song on If You’re Reading This it’s Too Late. Jungle deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Drake feat Sampha – Too Much

Artist: Drake

Album: Nothing Was The Same

Song Release Date: October 31 2013

Length:  4:21

On Too Much, Drake hops on the time machine and takes it back to when he was a young man struggling to get his name out there. He also touches on family issues, like his mom being to sick to get up and do things and how that took a toll on him. The hook from Sampha is wonderful and introspective and connects the listener seamlessly.  This has always been one of the best tracks on Nothing Was The Same for me because of how relatable and empathetic the song is. Too Much deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Sad Drake Songs

You & The 6 is an emotional song Drake made for his mother, Sandi Graham. On this song, Drake tells the listener the problems he had growing up in Toronto, Canada. He touches on race and because he is a mixed race man he used to get teased for having black in his DNA. He also reflects on the time his dad spent time behind bars and how that impacted the relationship between him and his mother. He concludes the songs by thanking the city of Toronto and his mother for making him man he is today. An emotional underrated gem by Drake. Take Care is full of emotional themes and the track Good Ones go is one that stands out. It is one of the most relatable songs on the album. It details the fading relationship between Drake and a girl. It is presumed to be a long distance relationship where is Drake touring the world and his girlfriend is slipping away from him and she doesn’t want to keep waiting on him. Drake is begging her to be patient and that he’ll be there to see her soon but deep down he knows she’s going to leave him. So many of us can relate to an emotional track like this. Drake – Doing it Wrong

Artist: Drake

Album: Take Care

Song Release Date: November 15 2011

Length:  4:25

Doing it Wrong explains the breakup of Drakes relationship with a girl and it’s one of the rare moments on a song where he doesn’t blame himself for it. He actually blames the girl for the breakup but also tries to make her feel better by stating that they both lived in a generation of not being in love and that people are only together to show off to others. The girl wants him back but Drake is past her and he tells her that she can cry but that’s not going to bring their relationship back. I feel so sorry for the girl but she’s done something bad for Drake to end the relationship. Alcohol addiction? drugs? excessive partying? Drake doesn’t tell us. Doing it Wrong deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Drake – Now & Forever

Sad Drake Songs

Artist: Drake

Album: If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late

Song Release Date: February 13 2015

Length:  4:41

The production on this song is simply glorious. Grimes was sampled to create an atmospheric and harmonic sound. Now & Forever can be construed that Drake is talking about leaving his label, but it can also be argued that he’s referring to wanting to leave the relationship he’s in with a girl. He feels as if she’s holding him back, that he’s scared of dying before achieving his true goals as she’s possibly a toxic person. Now & Forever deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Drake – Marvin’s Room

Artist: Drake

Album: Take Care

Song Release Date: June 28 2011

Length:  5:48

Marvin’s Room is an emotional song where a drunk Drake calls his ex-girlfriend and vents to her while he’s in the club. He mentions the good times they had together, how lonely he is now and throwing insults at her new boyfriend. He ruins any chances of getting with her again as he confesses that he’s had sex with 4 different women in a week and blames it on fame. He confesses that he’s an alcoholic and women have been living off him. This song is powerful because it is Drake addressing his issues and admitting that he is simply not perfect. Marvin’s Room deserves to be on our Top 10 Depressing and Sad Drake Songs list.

Drake – Look What You’ve done

Album: Take Care

Look What You’ve done is Drake’s Saddest/depressing song. He reflects on his past life and talks about the issues that impacted him. One of those was his mother’s sickness and how that affected the relationship between both of them. He reflects on a failed relationship with a girl call Nebby because he felt that he wasn’t ready. He also remembers the time Lil Wayne called him and how he ignited Drake’s rap career. The most emotional part of the song comes at the end where Drake’s grandmother leaves a voicemail for him expressing her love and thanks to him.
