Kanye West – Street Lights

Artist: Kanye West

Album: 808s & Heartbreak

Song Release Date: November 24 2008

Length:  3:09

Starting off our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs is Street Lights. There’s just something about Street Lights that I can’t seem to shake off, it’s a depressing song that sounds so calm, melodic and mellow.  To me, it is a masterpiece and the centrepiece of Kanye West’s Iconic and vastly influential album 808s & Heartbreak. When the background vocals kick in you’re bound to start getting emotional. If I see Kanye live and he performs Street Lights, tears may fall.  I’m serious. Street Lights deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

9.

Kanye West feat The-Dream, Chance the Rapper, Kelly Price, Kirk Franklin – Ultralight Beam

Best Kanye West Songs

Artist: Kanye West

Album: The Life of Pablo

Song Release Date: February 14 2016

Length:  5:20

Three years after Yeezus the world was baffled as to what sound The Life of Pablo was going to have. Was it going to be like his previous? Experimental and industrial or would Kanye be returning back to his soul-sampling roots. When I first threw on my headphones to play Ultralight Beam I fell in love with it instantly. The heavy gospel influences, the church chants, Kanye’s speech and Chance The Rapper’s incredible guest verse meant that the album started phenomenally and wasn’t toppled by the songs that followed next on the album. Ladies and gentlemen this is a textbook example of the intro song being the best song on the album. Modern day classic. Ultralight Beam deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

8.

Kanye West – Blood on the Leaves

Best Kanye West Songs

Artist: Kanye West

Album: Yeezus

Song Release Date: June 18 2013

Length:  6:00

I had to choose between Hold My Liquor and Blood on the Leaves, but the latter just edged it for me because of the sample that was used. This song brilliantly samples Nina Simone’s rendition of Strange Fruit, a song that protested American racism and the wrong inhumane Lynching of African Americans. But Kanye turns it into a marriage of triumphant full-blown horns, mad bass and auto-tune effect. Blood on the Leaves is a song about misguided love and mistakes. when the beat drops, I start throwing stuff around because it gets me so hype. Blood on the Leaves deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

Kanye West – Jesus Walks

Artist: Kanye West

Album: The College Dropout

Song Release Date:  May 25 2004

Length:  3:13

Man, time flies. It was almost 15 years ago when I was a kid and heard this song. It was the bum bum bum bum bum adlibs that first got my curiosity. By the end of the song, I was mesmerised. Jesus Walks will always make the best of Kanye West songs list, but if it isn’t in the top 10 then that list is looking pretty suspect.  Through the Wire may have introduced the world to Kanye West, but it was Jesus Walks that catapulted him to an international megastar. On Jesus Walks Kanye talks about drugs, sex, racism and violence plaguing and destroying society. When people say they miss the old Kanye, this is what they are referring to. Conscious Kanye backed with mostly soul and gospel production was simply a joy to hear. This should be one of the songs recommend for people who haven’t listened to Kanye West before. Essential Kanye West. Jesus Walks deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

6.

Kanye West feat Bon Iver – Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America

Artist: Kanye West

Album:  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Song Release Date:  May 4 2014

Length:  5:54

Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America end My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. I ready explained the meaning the of the track here: Top 10 Concept Hip Hop Rap Albums. It is a fitting end to arguably one of the greatest (rap) albums ever made. Kanye said in 2015 that it started off as a poem sent to Kim Kardashian by email, so its safe to say of Kanye never met Kim we may never have got this song. It’s starts of slow and ends triumphantly. Kanye’s verse may be short here, but it’s impactful and so beautiful. Lost in the World/Who Will Survive in America deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

5.

Kanye West feat Dwele – Flashing Lights

Artist: Kanye West

Album: Graduation

Song Release Date:  November 12 2007

Length:  3:57

Flashing Lights is far away the best song on Graduation. It was always going to make this list. Kanye went from his first two rap albums being soul inspired to stadium status music. Stronger took all limelight from Flashing Lights in 2007, but real music fans know that Flashing Lights is a far superior song all round. There are many highlights on this album: the background vocals, Kanye’s humorous verse, the synths and the electronic futuristic feel. However, Dwele’s hook steals the show here. As I recallllllllll….. Flashing Lights deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

4.

Kanye West feat Dwele – Power

Artist: Kanye West

Album: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Song Release Date:  May 28 2010

Length:  4:52

Where do I even start with this monster of a track? Power is just an outrageous track that shows his lyrical prowess and stellar production skills. It also shows us just how arrogant and boastful the man is. He states how he knows he’s so fucking gifted, boasts about how much power he has, that he embodies every characteristic of the egotistic and takes aim at his critics, but then at the end of the song unexpectedly and strangely raps about killing himself.  The production on this is simply exceptionally good, the chants, the guitar, the drums, the sample use of 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson and the killer synth at the end all complement each other extremely well. Have you noticed how many commercials use this song? Who can blame them? Power is a banger and sounds like something aliens would make. Power deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

3.

Kanye West feat Really Doe & Nas – We Major

Best Kanye West Songs

Artist: Kanye West

Album:  Late Registration

Song Release Date:  August 30 2005

Length:  7:28

By far my favourite song on Late Registration. We Major is the song to play when you are on top of the world, when you have millions of fans and when you can afford to buy anything. A song with incredible production by Kanye West and Jon Brion. It is one of the most perfect songs I have ever heard. The hook, the classic Nas verse, the legendary horns and the can I talk my Sh!t again part. We Major is the definition of an epic rap song. Haters will say We Major was overproduced, real ones will call it a classic track on a classic album. We Major deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

2.

Kanye West feat Rick Ross – Devil in a New Dress

Artist: Kanye West

Album:  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Song Release Date:  September 3 2010

Length: 5:32

I couldn’t pick the best part of this extraordinary song. That would be too hard. Everyone who had a placement on this track came through with the goods. Kanye rapped some of the best lyrics in his entire career, Bink! made a jaw-dropping heavenly beat, Mike Deans guitar solo was simply absurd and Rick Ross’s feature at the end is one of the greatest in rap history. Devil in a New Dress tells the tale of a relationship not working out and Kanye seeing through his girlfriend’s tricks, who only wants to stay in it for Kanye’s money. I think he’s talking about Amber Rose here. Devil in a New Dress deserves to be on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.

1.

Kanye West feat Pusha T – Runaway

Artist: Kanye West

Album:  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Song Release Date:  October 4 2010

Length:  9:08

Coming in at number one on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list is Runaway. Runaway is an almost 10-minute epic that details Kanye’s frustration with himself and his tendency to always f*ck up a good thing. He admits he’s a cheater, a scumbag, an ass hole and better yet tells his girlfriend to run away from him as fast she could, before he self-destructs.  To top it off, the auto-tune at the end of the track just adds to the greatness of Runaway. The best song of the 2010 decade and also Kanye’s saddest song.

Runway deserves to be number one on our Top 10 Best Kanye West Songs Ever list.
